Heritage Tree and Roads

Heritage Trees
· Majestic mature trees are the natural heritage of Singapore and serve as important green landmarks of our Tropical Garden City.
· A sense of identity with the place we live in
· As Singapore progresses, there is a danger of losing these mature trees. In view of this concern, the Heritage Trees Scheme was announced in 17 Aug 2001 with the objective of promoting conservation of our mature trees to the community.
· Heritage trees cannot be cut down and are protected with lightning conductors
· In support of this initiative, a Heritage Trees Fund has also been established by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), with an initial donation of $125,000.
· The Fund will be used to kick start a conservation programme to safeguard our Heritage Trees and to promote appreciation of our natural heritage. Some of these programme initiatives include installation of lightning conductors, interpretive signage, and putting in place a nomination scheme for the community.
· A panel of officials and nature-loving volunteers decide if a tree should be placed on the register, based on its appearance, height and girth, as well as its social, historical and educational significance.
· More than 100 Heritage Trees

On a related note:
Heritage Roads:
· conserve some of the more scenic and significant tree-lined roads in Singapore
· As mature roadside trees constitute the backbone of the Garden City, we will conserve the unique tree-scapes along some of the roads in Singapore, designating them as Heritage Roads
· The preservation of Heritage Roads will add an element of permanence to the landscape which will contribute to Singapore's sense of identity, history and continuity.
· Arcadia Road
· Mount Pleasant Road
· Mandai Road
· South Buona Vista Road
· Lim Chu Kang Road
