Chinese Fan Palm

Common Name: Chinese Fan Palm, Fountain Palm, Serdang, Chinese Fountain Palm
Scientific Name: Livistona chinensis
Family: Palmae
Origin: Japan, Taiwan

General Facts:

  • Produces cream coloured flowers but may be difficult to spot – hidden among the leaves
  • Slow growth rate
  • Wayside palm

Food/Medical facts:
  • Hot water extract of the dry fruits had been used in folklore medicine in Southern China for treating tumours

Other uses:
  • Mostly for decorative purposes

How to recognise:
  • Named for its fan-shaped leaves
  • Leaf tips are droopy and hangs down like a fountain – hence also the name Chinese Fountain Palm
