General Facts:


  • The species name pulcherrima literally means "very pretty".

  • It blooms all year round.

  • It loves the sun and can grown in very dry soil due to its heat and drought resistance,

  • It is the National Flower of Barbados.

  • It bears a type of pod shaped fruit that is brown in colour and inedible.

  • The leaves can be used against kidney stones, malarial fever and bronchitis as they are purgative and has anti-inflammatory properties.

  • The juice from the flower can cure sores.

  • The seeds can cure cure bad cough, breathing difficulty, and chest pain.

  • It is reported that four grams of the root can induce abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy.
